13-Year-Old Boy Shot Dead Amid Clash at Mining Site in Adelekezu; Youth Torch Vehicles

A tragic confrontation at a mining site in Adelekezu near Dadwen in the Axim District has resulted in the death of a 13-year-old boy and the destruction of several company vehicles.

The incident occurred on Saturday, December 13, 2025, when youth from the community allegedly attempted to invade the mining company’s concession, leading to a clash with private security personnel.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that during the confrontation, some youth tried to seize a pump-action shotgun from a security guard. In resistance, the guard fired a shot, fatally wounding 13-year-old Pious Nkansah, also known as Nkrumah.

The boy was rushed to Axim Government Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Enraged by the shooting, the youth reportedly went on a rampage, setting ablaze two 4×4 SUV vehicles and two tipper trucks. A pickup truck and a Toyota Land Cruiser were also damaged.

Police responded swiftly, rescuing 11 workers from the site who were under threat of lynching.

Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the destruction: Gyenyame Owusu (38), Matthew Asamah (24), Nana Yaw (15), Yaw Opoku (16), and Kojo Agyei (21). They face charges of causing harm and unlawful damage.

The Western Regional Police Command has launched a full investigation and appealed for calm in the community, urging residents to cooperate to ensure justice.

This incident highlights ongoing tensions surrounding mining activities in Ghana’s Western Region, often linked to disputes over land and resources.
