Zuarungu SHS Closed Indefinitely After Violent Clashes Over Phone Theft

The Upper East Regional Minister, Donatus Akamugri Atanga, has ordered the indefinite closure of Zuarungu Senior High School following violent clashes between Gurune (Frafra) and Kusasi students on July 20, 2025, sparked by an alleged mobile phone theft.

The conflict escalated into a major brawl, resulting in the burning of school structures and heightened tensions on campus. According to reports, four students were arrested, but one suspect escaped while being transported to the police station, allegedly seizing a police officer’s magazine during the escape.

To prevent reprisal attacks, a joint team of police and military personnel has been deployed to escort students from Bawku back to their hometown under heavy security.

Authorities are working to restore calm as investigations continue, amid broader concerns about the Bawku conflict’s impact on regional stability.
