Work Resumes on Akyem Abenase Bridge After Years of Neglect

Rehabilitation works have officially resumed on the concrete bridge at Akyem Abenase, a structure originally constructed during the era of Kwame Nkrumah but left in a deteriorated state for several years.

The bridge, described by residents as a “death trap,” is reported to have claimed at least four lives due to its poor condition and lack of maintenance. Community members say repeated appeals for repairs went unanswered after the project was initially abandoned, reportedly due to funding challenges.

The Akyemansa District Assembly has now intervened, awarding a new contract for the rehabilitation of the structure, with construction work currently underway.

District Chief Executive, Linda Ahinkora, recently led an inspection of the site to assess progress. She indicated that the project was identified as a top priority upon her assumption of office, given its importance to transportation and public safety in the area.

Officials revealed that the project had previously stalled after the original contractor reportedly abandoned the site due to financial constraints. The re-awarding of the contract is aimed at ensuring its completion.

Residents of Akyem Abenase have expressed relief at the resumption of work, describing it as a long-overdue response to a critical safety concern. Many have commended the district assembly and government for taking action.

The rehabilitation is expected to restore safe passage across the bridge and significantly reduce risks faced by daily commuters who rely on the route.
