Adutwum Urges Gov’t to Retain Teacher Licensure Exams for Professional St

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Education Minister and Bosomtwe MP, has urged the government to reconsider its plan to abolish the Teacher Licensure Examination, emphasizing its role in maintaining high professional standards for teachers.

In an interview with Channel One News on July 21, 2025, Adutwum highlighted the exam’s importance in validating teacher competence, particularly for international opportunities, noting that it allows Ghanaian teachers to work abroad, such as in the UK, without additional certification.

He recalled that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) piloted the program before the New Patriotic Party (NPP) scaled it up, stating, “They are in power now… it is between them and the good people of Ghana.” Instead of scrapping the exam, Adutwum suggested reforming its implementation, such as adjusting its timing.

Current Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu confirmed that the National Teaching Council (NTC) will offer a final resit opportunity for eligible trainees before the August 30, 2025, deadline, as part of a transition to a new teacher qualification assessment system.

Iddrisu assured that the new framework will maintain the rigor and standards required for the teaching profession, addressing concerns about quality as the government phases out the current model.

This follows Iddrisu’s visit to the Accra Senior High School examination center on July 19, 2025, where 37,000 candidates, including 5,000 retakers, participated in the ongoing licensure exams.
