The Volta North Regional Police Command has secured the conviction and sentencing of Stella Amedzorme, 31, to three years’ imprisonment for abducting an eight-month-old baby at the Kpando Market in the Volta Region.
The case was reported on 17 July 2026 after the baby’s mother, Gloria Xagbe, 21, informed police that she had briefly left her eight-month-old son in the care of the convict, a fellow market trader, while she went to buy packaging bags.
On her return, both the convict and the baby were missing. Acting on intelligence, police arrested Stella Amedzorme on 18 July 2026 at Toviate, a suburb of Kwamekrom in the Oti Region, and rescued the baby.
During investigations, the convict admitted taking the child on the instructions of her fiancé, who is currently at large.
The convict was first arraigned before the Kpando Circuit Court on 20 July 2026 and remanded into police custody. She reappeared before the Court on 3 August 2026, pleaded guilty to the offence, and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.
The police successfully rescued the eight-month-old child unharmed, while efforts are ongoing to arrest the convict’s fiancé to assist investigations.
The Volta North Regional Police Command assured the public of its continued commitment to protecting lives, especially children, and urged parents and guardians to exercise caution when leaving their children in the care of others.
