Woman collapses after 100 lashes under Sharia law in Indonesia

A woman has reportedly collapsed after receiving 100 lashes alongside her partner for allegedly sleeping together outside marriage under Sharia law enforcement in Indonesia’s Aceh province.
The punishment took place in Banda Aceh, located on the northern tip of Sumatra Island, where authorities publicly enforce Islamic Sharia regulations.
The unnamed woman was seen being carried away after the caning, which left her unconscious. Her partner also received the same punishment and was observed visibly in pain as he endured the lashes.
The corporal punishment was carried out by an official dressed in a brown robe and a white mask, in accordance with local judicial procedures.
Authorities in Aceh confirmed that the couple were among several individuals punished for violating Sharia laws, which prohibit unmarried couples from engaging in sexual relations or spending the night together.
Under the province’s strict legal system, offenders can receive between 25 and 100 lashes, depending on the severity of the offence. Some of those punished were reportedly involved in relationships arranged through online platforms.
Aceh remains the only region in Indonesia that implements Sharia law, which operates alongside the country’s national legal system.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the province’s strict enforcement of moral and religious laws, which continue to generate international debate over human rights and corporal punishment.
