Violence Forces Shutdown of Adjen Kotoku Onion Market

Trading activities at the Adjen Kotoku Onion Market have come to a standstill following a violent clash involving armed men, leaving several traders injured and sparking renewed security concerns.

The incident, reportedly triggered by a rival group attempting to take control of the market, has disrupted operations at one of Ghana’s major onion trading hubs. Authorities have since shut down the market to prevent further violence.

Spokesperson for the Onion Sellers Association, Mustapha Sulemana Talimu, confirmed the closure on Tuesday, describing the development as a significant setback for traders.

He explained that the attack created widespread fear, forcing many traders to flee and abandon their businesses, effectively halting all commercial activity.

The situation has been worsened by reports that onion supply routes have also been affected, with trucks bound for Ghana allegedly blocked in Nigeria—a development traders believe is linked to earlier disputes.

Mr Talimu called for urgent government intervention, warning that tensions could escalate if swift action is not taken. He added that armed individuals were still present in the area, preventing access to the market.

Traders are now appealing for increased security presence to restore calm and enable business to resume, amid fears that the disruption could impact onion supply nationwide.
