Vice President Naana Jane Praises UDS for Historic University World Cup Win in China

Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has hailed the University for Development Studies (UDS) football team for their groundbreaking victory at the 2025 University World Cup in Dalian, China, on September 28, 2025. The Tamale-based university became the first African institution to win the global tournament, defeating Brazil’s Paulista University 2-1 in a thrilling final.

In a statement on Sunday, the Vice President called the triumph a proud moment for Ghana. “Your determination, teamwork, and resilience have lifted Ghana to the top of global university football. This is a victory for UDS and the nation,” she said, urging young Ghanaians to draw inspiration from the team’s success.

Coached by Ibrahim Tanko, UDS overcame an early deficit in the final, equalizing in stoppage time and clinching the win with a dramatic extra-time goal. The team’s unbeaten run through the group stages and victories over South Korea and Spain showcased their discipline and flair.

The win, following gold medals at the Ghana and Africa University Games, solidifies UDS’s status as a university football powerhouse and a symbol of African sporting excellence.
