Police Bust Ashanti-Led Robbery Gang: 10 Arrested, 3 Killed in Shootout, Weapons Seized

The Ghana Police Service has dismantled a notorious armed robbery syndicate responsible for at least 11 rural bank heists across five regions, arresting 10 suspects, killing three in a gun battle, and recovering 14 firearms, GH¢19,000 in cash, vehicles, and other valuables after a six-month intelligence operation.

Inspector-General of Police Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno announced the breakthrough at a press conference in Accra, commending the Ashanti Regional Police Command’s intelligence team.

Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, detailed that the gang, led by Kwasi Egyir alias “Cobra” and comprising about 15 members, targeted rural banks in Ahafo, Western, Central, Eastern, and Ashanti regions between April and September 2025.

The syndicate’s latest attack on September 14 hit the Saint Martins De Porres Cooperative Credit Union in Atonsu Monaco, where robbers held a security guard and his wife hostage before fleeing with cash.

Other hits included Bosomtwe Rural Bank at Suntresu, Kakum Rural Bank at Elmina, MRB Bank in Winneba, South Birim Rural Bank at Akyem Asini, EcoBank Ahafo Kenyasi branch, and more.

Seized items include three AK-47 rifles (one stolen from police, linked to the November 2024 murder of Corporal Francis Adu Yaw on the Bibiani-Goaso highway), seven pump-action shotguns, three pistols, a single-barrel gun, six vehicles, four motorbikes, mobile phones, and jewelry.

Eleven officers involved in the operation were promoted on the spot for their efforts.
