Veteran Actor William “Akpatse” Addo Passes Away After Years of Health Battles

The Ghanaian entertainment industry is in mourning following the death of veteran actor and cultural icon William “Akpatse” Addo, who reportedly succumbed to complications from prolonged health struggles.

The news, which broke earlier today, has left fans, colleagues, and the arts community reeling. Akpatse, known for his unforgettable portrayals of the wise yet mischievous character in numerous Kumawood films and TV series, had been battling various ailments for years, including mobility issues that limited his public appearances.

Born in the early 1950s, Addo rose to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s through his roles in local theatre productions and early Ghanaian cinema. His breakthrough came with the iconic “Akpatse” character in the popular TV series Efewura, where he embodied the quintessential Ghanaian elder – humorous, philosophical, and deeply rooted in tradition. Over his five-decade career, he starred in over 100 films, including classics like I Want Your Sex and Papa Lazer, blending comedy with social commentary on family, poverty, and urban life.

Tributes have poured in from across the industry. Veteran actress Jackie Appiah described him as “a father figure to us all,” while producer Samuel K. Onyilo called his passing “a massive loss to Ghanaian storytelling.” The Ghana Actors Guild issued a statement praising Addo’s dedication to mentoring young talents and preserving Akan cultural narratives through film.

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced, but a national memorial is expected in the coming days. Akpatse leaves behind a wife, five children, and a legacy that continues to entertain and educate generations.
