Vandalized Akufo-Addo Statue in Sekondi Sparks Public Debate and Controversy

Akufo-Addo Statue Vandalized in Sekondi-Takoradi, Public Reactions Divide

A statue of Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo, located near the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi-Takoradi, has been vandalized, leaving a noticeable hole in its left calf. The statue, unveiled by the president just last month, has since become the center of controversy.

The perpetrators of the vandalism remain unknown, and the motive behind the act is unclear. The statue had already divided public opinion, with some viewing it as a tribute to the President’s contributions to the region, while others dismissed it as unnecessary self-promotion.

Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah defended the monument, stating that it was meant to honor President Akufo-Addo’s initiatives, such as the rehabilitation of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, the Sinohydro interchange project, and the redevelopment of Takoradi Market Circle. However, criticism has mounted over the incomplete state of these projects.

Police are yet to issue an official statement or confirm an investigation into the incident. The vandalism has sparked diverse reactions, with some condemning the act and others questioning the statue’s necessity amid ongoing developmental challenges in the region.
