Tema, Greater Accra Region, Ghana – Workers of the Volta Aluminium Company Limited (VALCO), together with the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU), have staged a protest in Tema over what they describe as alleged plans to sell the state-owned aluminium company.
The demonstrators are opposing any move to privatise or dispose of VALCO, arguing that such a decision could negatively affect workers and undermine Ghana’s industrial development.
Speaking to Adom News during the protest, National Union Chairman of the ICU, Morgan Ayawine, said concerns over a possible sale of the company have existed for years, creating uncertainty among employees.
He warned that any decision to sell VALCO could have serious consequences for workers and the country’s industrial sector.
The Local Union Chairman of VALCO, Samuel Agyemang Watchman, also appealed to Ghanaians to support the workers’ efforts to protect the company.
He described VALCO as a strategic national asset that must be preserved for the benefit of future generations.
The workers insisted they would continue to advocate for the survival and expansion of the company, urging government to engage them on the future of VALCO instead of pursuing any alleged plans to sell it.
