UTAG Issues 14-Day Ultimatum for Removal of GTEC Leadership

The University Teachers Association of Ghana has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the government, demanding the removal of the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission, Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, and his deputy, Prof. Augustine Ocloo.
In a petition addressed to President John Dramani Mahama, UTAG accused the GTEC leadership of regulatory overreach, issuing unilateral directives, and adopting what it described as a coercive administrative approach.
At a press briefing in Accra, UTAG National President, Prof. Vera Fiador, also called for the immediate withdrawal of GTEC’s September 30 circular, which disaccredited some institutions.
She further urged the government to fully operationalise the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, 2020 (Act 1023) through a clear Legislative Instrument, ensuring consultative rule-making, limits on regulatory interference, and a transparent appeals process.
UTAG insists that the circulars issued on September 30 and October 1, 2025, must be withdrawn and subjected to stakeholder consultation and alignment with existing legal frameworks.
Meanwhile, the President of the University of Ghana chapter of UTAG, Dr Jerry Joe Harrison, warned that the association could escalate its actions if the demands are not met.
He indicated that UTAG may withdraw services rendered to GTEC or resort to industrial action, stressing that the situation directly affects both lecturers and students.
The ultimatum sets the stage for possible tensions within Ghana’s tertiary education sector if a resolution is not reached within the stipulated period.
