Unusual Weather Pattern Delays Harmattan Season — Ghana Meteorological Agency

The Ghana Meteorological Agency has explained the unusual weather conditions currently being experienced across the country, describing the situation as rare for this time of year.

In a press release dated December 30, 2025, the Agency revealed that the 2025/2026 Harmattan season has been marked by an unexpected delay. According to the statement, several parts of southern Ghana are still recording rainfall in late December, a development that is statistically uncommon during the Harmattan period.

The Agency noted that even northern Ghana, which typically experiences peak dry conditions at this time, has recorded occasional rainfall. This anomaly, it explained, is largely due to significant fluctuations in the position of the Inter-Tropical Boundary (ITB).
“The ITB, which marks the meeting point of dry Saharan air and moist maritime air, has remained further north than usual,” the statement said. It added that warm sea surface temperatures in the Gulf of Guinea have allowed moisture to linger over the country, resulting in continued rainfall.

Looking ahead to the first quarter of 2026, the Meteorological Agency anticipates a generally weak Harmattan season. However, it cautioned the public to remain alert, as there could be intermittent episodes of severe Harmattan conditions.

In northern Ghana, the Agency expects the atmosphere to become increasingly dry and dusty, with reduced visibility compared to southern parts of the country. Meanwhile, forest zones and some coastal areas are likely to continue experiencing localized rainfall.

“These showers are expected due to ongoing fluctuations of the ITB and the influence of warm ocean temperatures, which prevent dry air from fully dominating the southern sectors,” the Agency explained.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency has advised the public to stay informed and take necessary precautions as weather conditions continue to evolve.
