UN Releases $60 Million to Combat Ebola Outbreak in DR Congo

The United Nations has allocated $60 million from its emergency response fund to support efforts to contain the deadly Ebola outbreak currently affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo) and nearby regions.

The funding, announced on Friday, May 22, will be used to strengthen critical response measures including contact tracing, establishment of treatment centres, surveillance, and intensified community engagement to help slow the spread of the virus.

According to health authorities, the outbreak has so far recorded about 750 suspected cases and 177 deaths, raising growing concern among international health organisations and governments across the region.

The World Health Organization has already declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern following the rapid rise in infections and deaths.

Health experts say the outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there is currently no approved vaccine. The virus is believed to have a fatality rate of nearly one in three infected persons, making containment efforts urgent and critical.

The response strategy will focus on rapid identification of suspected cases, isolation and treatment of infected persons, and public education campaigns aimed at reducing transmission within affected communities.

International agencies and local health authorities are continuing to coordinate efforts to prevent the outbreak from spreading further across Central and East Africa.
