UK-Based Ghanaian Urges Mahama to Keep Ministers Closer to Constituents

Ade Sawyerr has called on John Dramani Mahama to ensure that government ministers spend more time engaging with their constituents instead of attending social events.

Speaking during a town hall meeting with President Mahama in London on Sunday, May 31, Sawyerr criticised what he described as the increasing visibility of ministers at parties and social gatherings, arguing that such appearances create the perception that public officials are disconnected from the everyday concerns of citizens.

“Every weekend, we see on TikTok the ministers at parties instead of being with their constituents. They are talking to each other, blowing time. It does not look good, Mr President,” he stated.

He urged the President to encourage ministers to spend weekends in their constituencies interacting directly with the people they serve.

“Please tell them that at weekends, they should go back to their constituents and find out what it is that the people of Ghana need,” he added.

Sawyerr acknowledged what he described as encouraging economic indicators presented by some government officials but maintained that the public perception of ministers’ activities remains a concern.

“I’ve listened to some of the ministers, and whilst it looks like the metrics are going in the right direction, the optics do not look very good,” he said.

He also pointed to the recurring flooding crisis in Accra as an example of an issue that requires greater government attention and practical solutions.

“Every year, there’s perennial flooding. We have not been able to solve that problem in the city of Accra, our main city,” he noted.

Sawyerr further commended the Ghana High Commission in the United Kingdom for organising the engagement, which provided members of the Ghanaian diaspora an opportunity to interact directly with the President and raise concerns about governance and national development.
