The University for Development Studies (UDS) has retained its African university football crown after a dramatic 2-1 extra-time victory over Julius Nyerere University of Guinea in the final of the 12th All-Africa University Games.
The Ghanaian champions were pushed to the limit in a bruising final that featured injuries, controversial refereeing decisions, intense exchanges between the two technical benches and a determined fightback from the Guineans before Ezedeen Alhassan produced the moment of magic that settled the contest.
The match began at a furious pace, with both sides committing players forward in search of an early breakthrough. UDS, however, suffered an early setback when winger Alhassan Zakaria was caught by a heavy challenge and was forced off after signalling that he could not continue. He was replaced by new recruit Abdul Raphui.
Despite the disruption, UDS remained composed, building from the back through wing-backs George Renchi and Gerald Kweku Ackuoku while Jonas Agyemontor and Ibrahim Mohammed held firm in central defence.
Captain Mohammed Asigri, Hamza Abukari and Mahama Adam battled in midfield to prevent the physically imposing Guinean side from taking control, while Raphui, striker Akusaayela Nuhu and Ezedeen Alhassan provided the attacking threat.
Neither side could break the deadlock before the interval, with the first half ending goalless.
UDS finally found the breakthrough 15 minutes into the second half. Nuhu drove a powerful effort across goal from the left, forcing the Julius Nyerere goalkeeper into a parry. Raphui reacted quickest, rising to head the rebound into the net and put UDS ahead.
The goal sparked an immediate response from the Guineans, who intensified their pressure and pushed the defending champions deeper into their own half.
Their persistence paid off in the 70th minute when a defensive lapse presented an attacker with an opportunity outside the penalty area. He made no mistake, unleashing a powerful strike beyond UDS goalkeeper Edo to level the score at 1-1.
The final then descended into a physical battle, with several players receiving heavy challenges and both technical benches becoming increasingly animated.
UDS suffered another setback when Agyemontor collided with a Guinean attacker in the air and sustained a head injury. He was stretchered off and replaced by Baba, who immediately settled into the defence alongside Ibrahim Mohammed.
Captain Asigri was also forced out through injury, with Wisdom taking his place as the Ghanaian side continued to lose key players across the pitch.
But the injuries and relentless physical pressure failed to break UDS.
With neither side able to find a winner in regulation time, the final went into extra time.
Five minutes into the second period of extra time, UDS won a free-kick just outside the Julius Nyerere penalty area.
Ezedeen Alhassan stepped up and delivered the decisive moment.
The midfielder curled a superb effort into the top-left corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance and sending the UDS bench and supporters into wild celebrations.
The late strike proved enough as UDS held on to win 2-1 and successfully defend its continental crown.
The victory also secures a remarkable place for UDS in university football history. The Ghanaian institution becomes the first university to simultaneously hold the World University Football Championship, African University Football Championship and West African University Football Championship titles.
UDS has also become the first university to win the African university football championship in consecutive editions.
After surviving injuries, physical pressure and a determined Guinean challenge, UDS leave Cairo not only as defending champions but as history-makers on the continental university football stage.
