UCC to Confer Distinguished Fellow Award on Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has announced that it will confer its prestigious Distinguished Fellow Award on Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang in recognition of her exceptional contributions to education, leadership, gender equity, governance, and national and global development.

In a press release issued on Friday, February 27, 2026, UCC described the award as a tribute to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s “distinguished services” to the university as an illustrious alumna and former Fellow, as well as her lifelong dedication to society, women and children, academia, democracy, and broader African advancement.

Historic Milestones Highlighted

The university particularly celebrated her groundbreaking roles:

  • First female Vice President of the Republic of Ghana — a “transformational moment in the country’s democratic and gender representation history.”
  • First female Vice-Chancellor of a public university in Ghana (UCC, 2008–2012).
  • Minister for Education (2013–2017), where she focused on strengthening basic and secondary education systems, teacher development, expanding access to quality education, and advocating equity for girls and marginalised communities.
  • Chancellor of the Women’s University in Africa (Zimbabwe, 2018–2024), where she demonstrated sustained commitment to advancing women’s access to higher education across the continent.

Award Ceremony Details

The conferment ceremony is scheduled for Friday, March 13, 2026, at the New Examination Centre on the UCC campus, commencing at 2:00 p.m. The event will bring together university leadership, government officials, academia, traditional authorities, and other dignitaries to celebrate Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s legacy.

UCC concluded the release with warm congratulations:
