UCC Student Innocentia Avinu Found Dead at Hutchland Beach, No Visible Injuries Detected

A Level 200 student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, has been found dead at the Hutchland Beach area near Duakor in Cape Coast.
The body of the Bachelor of Commerce (Human Resource) student was discovered by residents of the Duakor community on Friday, June 12, 2026, and reported to the police.
According to a statement from the University’s Directorate of Public Affairs, officers arrived at the scene around 6:00 a.m. and conducted a preliminary examination. No visible signs of physical injury were observed on the body.
The deceased was transported to the mortuary at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital for preservation and further forensic investigation.
Police later linked the body to UCC after receiving information from the university. The deceased’s roommate assisted in the identification process by providing a photograph at the police station.
The roommate reported that Ms. Avinu was last seen two days earlier, around 7:00 p.m., when she received a phone call, dressed casually, and left her hostel room at Amamoma. She did not return, prompting concern among friends and colleagues.
On Saturday, June 13, family members arrived at the police station and formally identified the body at the mortuary. Observations during the identification were consistent with the initial police findings — no visible physical injuries were detected.
The exact cause of death remains unknown. Police say a coroner’s form will be obtained from the court on Monday, June 15, to facilitate a full post-mortem examination by a pathologist.
The University of Cape Coast has expressed deep sorrow over the incident and assured the public that investigations are ongoing. Management has been in contact with the bereaved family and is providing support to the deceased’s relatives, her roommate, course mates, and the broader university community.
The University has cautioned against speculation and unverified reports, urging the public to allow the police to conduct their investigations without interference.
Further updates are expected once the post-mortem results are available.
