Two Police Officers Injured in Violent Clash at Kukurantumi After Suspect’s Death

Two police officers from the Eastern Regional Police Command were injured during a violent confrontation with angry youth at the Kukurantumi Police Station on Sunday morning, following the death of a suspect, Bright Kena (alias D-Ball), in custody. The officers, who sustained eye injuries, were treated and discharged from the Kukurantumi Community Hospital.

The unrest began around 7:00 a.m. after Kena, arrested for unlawful entry, stealing, and possession of suspected marijuana, died while receiving medical treatment at the hospital. Enraged residents, alleging police brutality by an officer nicknamed “Kumador,” stormed the station and barracks, pelting officers with stones, clubs, and other weapons and attempting to set the building ablaze.

Reinforcement teams from the Eastern Regional Police Counter Terrorism Unit and Akyem Tafo Division faced heavy resistance, with stones smashing the windshields of a Toyota Tundra (GP 4004) and the Eastern Regional Police Operations Commander’s Toyota Hilux. The Ghana Police Service shut down the station and relocated services to nearby facilities, as ordered by Inspector-General Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to ensure officer safety.

The Police Professional Standards Bureau and Criminal Investigations Department are investigating Kena’s death, with video footage under review to identify and prosecute attackers. The Eastern Regional Command, led by Supt. George Peprah Mills, has engaged Kena’s family and community leaders, urging lawful grievance resolution.

The incident reflects ongoing tensions over custodial deaths, with locals demanding accountability as calm is slowly restored.
