Two Arrested Over Highway Robbery That Killed Footballer Dominic Frimpong
Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the deadly highway robbery that claimed the life of Dominic Frimpong, police have confirmed.
The arrests followed an intelligence-led operation targeting the group believed to be behind the attack. Authorities say one of the suspects—alleged to be the gang leader—sustained injuries during an exchange of fire with police and is currently receiving treatment under guard at a hospital.
Deadly ambush on team bus
The incident occurred as players of Berekum Chelsea were returning from a league match against FC Samartex 1996.
According to police reports, armed men mounted a roadblock along the Bibiani–Goaso highway near Ahyiresu, forcing the team bus to stop before opening fire.
In the ensuing chaos, players and officials fled into nearby bushes to escape the gunmen, with several sustaining injuries.
Frimpong, a 20-year-old forward, was shot in the head and rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Ongoing investigations
Police say efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest other members of the robbery gang.
The incident has sparked renewed concern over security on Ghana’s highways, particularly for sports teams and long-distance travellers.
Authorities have assured the public of intensified operations to combat highway robbery and improve safety across the country.
