Tragic Helicopter Crash Claims Lives of Defence Minister Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Murtala Mohammed, and Others in Ashanti Region

A devastating Ghana Air Force Z9 helicopter crash in Adansi Akrofuom, Ashanti Region, on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, has claimed the lives of several prominent figures, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, according to an official announcement by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah during an emergency press conference at the Jubilee House.

The aircraft, carrying three crew members and five passengers, departed Accra at 09:12 GMT en route to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP). It lost radar contact shortly after takeoff and crashed into a tree, bursting into flames and leaving the wreckage unrecognizable. Eyewitnesses described a horrific scene, with initial reports indicating dismembered body parts at the site, suggesting no survivors.

Among the confirmed deceased are former Ashanti Regional Minister Samuel Sarpong, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed, former Member of Parliament Samuel Aboagye, and the crew members: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Mane-Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah. The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), in a statement signed by Acting Director General of Public Relations Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, confirmed the helicopter was off radar and noted that search and rescue efforts are ongoing to establish further details.

Preliminary reports suggest poor weather conditions may have contributed to the crash, though the exact cause remains under investigation. President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the national flag to fly at half-mast in honor of the victims, as the nation mourns the loss of these key figures.

The tragedy has sparked widespread grief, with posts on X reflecting public shock and prayers for the affected families. Emergency responders continue to investigate the crash site, and further updates are expected as the GAF and government work to provide clarity on this national tragedy.
