Tragic Drowning of 8-Year-Old in Kubugu Sparks Calls for Flood Safety Measures

The Kubugu community in Mamprugu Moagduri District, North East Region, is grieving the loss of eight-year-old Adam Mujaheed, who drowned in an abandoned brick-making pit filled with rainwater after a heavy downpour over the weekend of July 12-13, 2025.

According to reports from Graphic Online and Asaase Radio, the incident occurred on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, when Adam accidentally fell into the flooded pit while playing with friends after school.

National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) officials, already in the area assessing flood impacts, responded swiftly but could not save the boy, who was pronounced dead on arrival at a nearby health facility. Overcome with grief, Adam’s mother fainted and was hospitalized but has since stabilized.

Alhaji Tahiru Rafiu, North East Regional Director of NADMO, confirmed that Adam’s body was handed over to his family for burial per Islamic customs. He noted that the floods also destroyed several homes, displacing residents in Kubugu, a community within a district of 68,746 people (2021 Ghana Statistical Service census). NADMO has deployed teams to assess the damage and is intensifying public education campaigns in flood-prone areas, urging residents to relocate to higher ground.

Rafiu emphasized safety precautions during the rainy season to prevent further tragedies, as the region faces recurring flooding risks due to its low-lying geography (9°55’N-10°35’N, 0°35’W-1°45’W).

The incident highlights the dangers of abandoned pits, a known hazard in rural Ghana, where heavy rains—averaging 1,200 mm annually in the North East Region—can turn such sites into deadly traps. Community leaders and NADMO are calling for stricter regulations on securing abandoned sites
