Traditional Council Representative Appeals to IGP to “Chase Out” Drug Dealers from Techiman-WA Station

The representative of the Techiman Traditional Council at the Techiman Central Market, Mr. Johnson Oppong, has made a passionate appeal to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohunu, to urgently intervene in what he describes as rampant drug dealing around the Techiman-WA transport station.
In a strongly worded statement, Mr. Oppong accused local police authorities of failing to act decisively despite the open and persistent nature of the alleged illegal activities in the area. According to him, the situation has deteriorated to the point where traders, travelers, and residents now live in fear.
“The situation at the Techiman-WA station is getting out of hand. These drug dealers are operating openly and brazenly. It is destroying our youth and threatening the safety and sanity of the community,” he said.
Mr. Oppong stressed that previous complaints and local interventions have produced little to no results, prompting the Traditional Council to seek direct intervention from police headquarters.
“We are appealing to the IGP as a matter of urgency to help chase out these drug dealers from the station for sanity to prevail. The police here are aware of what is happening, but they seem unconcerned. We need top-level action to restore order,” he added.
The Techiman-WA station is a major transport hub linking travelers to northern Ghana and neighboring countries. Its strategic importance and constant human traffic, stakeholders say, have been exploited by criminal elements who allegedly use the area as a base for narcotics distribution, with young people being the most affected.
Market women and transport operators have also expressed concern, noting that the growing presence of drug dealers is harming business, increasing insecurity, and tarnishing the image of Techiman as a commercial center.
Residents and traditional authorities are hopeful that the appeal will prompt swift action from the Ghana Police Service to clamp down on drug-related activities and restore confidence and safety at the busy transport terminal
