Tony Aidoo Slams OSP’s Kissi Agyebeng, Questions Competence in Ghana’s Anti-Corruption Fight
Former Senior Presidential Aide Dr. Tony Aidoo has voiced strong distrust in the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) and its head, Kissi Agyebeng, accusing the agency of failing to effectively combat corruption in Ghana. In an exclusive interview on JoyNews on July 17, 2025, Aidoo criticized the OSP’s lack of successful prosecutions, particularly highlighting the mishandling of the Cecilia Dapaah case, stating, “He talks big, he talks small, and he doesn’t know what he is doing. He is a shame.” Aidoo argued that Agyebeng’s failure to build robust cases leads to judicial dismissals, urging him to “talk less and do more.”
Despite Aidoo’s critique, the OSP, established under the Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 959), has a multifaceted mandate to investigate, prosecute, recover assets, and prevent corruption involving public officers, politically exposed persons, and private sector actors. Since its inception, the OSP has secured seven convictions, recovered over GH¢4 million in illicit proceeds, and prevented corrupt transactions worth over GH¢283 million, including savings of GH¢135 million. High-profile investigations include the Cecilia Dapaah case, Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) contracts, the National Cathedral Project, ambulance procurement, illegal mining, banking sector crises, and vote-buying allegations.
The OSP has also launched preventive initiatives like the “Youth Against Corruption Initiative,” reaching over 6 million people, and advocated for reforms in political party financing. It collaborates with agencies like CHRAJ and the Financial Intelligence Centre to enhance anti-corruption efforts. Aidoo’s remarks come amid the OSP’s recent charges against former NPA CEO Mustapha Abdul-Hamid and others in a GH¢280 million extortion and money laundering scandal, reflecting ongoing scrutiny of the agency’s effectiveness despite its achievements.
