Three Dead, 30 Injured in Tragic Head-On Collision at Mampong Abuontem

A devastating head-on collision at Mampong Abuontem on Thursday, December 4, 2025, claimed three lives and left 30 others injured, including students from Ejura Agricultural College, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has confirmed.

The accident involved a Toyota Coaster minibus (registration: GV 1720-20), carrying 26 students, three staff members, and a driver from Ejura Agric College, and an Opel Astra (registration: AS 3838 W).

Eyewitnesses reported that the Opel Astra lost control on a sharp curve and veered into the path of the oncoming minibus, resulting in a violent impact around 5:30 PM.

The Opel Astra was completely mangled.

The minibus sustained damage to its windscreen, front bumper, and fenders.

Emergency Response

The Mampong Fire Station received the distress call at 5:38 PM and dispatched a rescue team led by LFM Emmanuel Kwami.

By the time responders arrived:

All 30 injured (26 students, 3 staff, 1 driver) had been evacuated by ambulance.

The Opel Astra driver was extricated deceased and handed to police.

Two additional occupants of the Opel Astra died later from injuries.

Hospital Update

Of the 30 injured:

26 were treated and discharged.

Four remain in critical condition at Mampong Government Hospital.

The GNFS crew cleared debris to restore traffic flow on the busy stretch.

Road Safety Plea

A GNFS spokesperson called the incident a “tragic reminder” of road risks, urging:

Regular vehicle maintenance

No overtaking on curves

Strict adherence to safety rules

This crash is the second fatal accident in the Ashanti Region on December 4, highlighting ongoing concerns over road infrastructure and driver behavior.

Investigations continue.
