At least three people have been killed and about 15 others injured following a violent attack by an estimated 300-member mob in New Winneba in the Central Region.
The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at about 10:40 a.m., when the group, reportedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, stormed the New Winneba Township.
According to the Ghana Police Service, the mob was armed with guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks and attacked residents, shops and properties belonging to natives of the area.
Several people sustained injuries during the violence, with about 15 victims transported to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical treatment. A police officer was also injured in the incident.
The Police have confirmed that three people have died in connection with the violence.
Following the attack, personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were deployed to the affected communities to restore and maintain calm.
The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohunu, has also ordered additional security reinforcement from the National Police Headquarters.
The reinforcement includes two armoured vehicles, which have been dispatched to strengthen security operations and protect residents and their properties.
The Police Service says the situation is currently under control, although security personnel remain deployed in the area to prevent further violence and escalation.
The Service has assured the public that additional information will be released as investigations and security operations continue.
