Three Confirmed Dead, Several Trapped in Akyem Wenchi Mining Pit Collapse

On Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a tragic mining pit collapse at Akyem Wenchi in the Denkyembour District of Ghana’s Eastern Region claimed the lives of three illegal miners, with several others feared trapped. The District Chief Executive (DCE) and Chairman of the District Security Council, Umar Ahmed, confirmed the incident, noting that rescue operations are underway but face significant challenges due to resistance from some miners and local youth gathered at the site.
Emergency teams, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ambulance Service, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), are working with local residents to rescue those still trapped. However, the unstable condition of the collapsed pit, which is filled with water, is hindering efforts. Ahmed emphasized the need for military support to bolster the operation, stating, “It is an unfortunate and difficult situation. We were met with resistance from the miners and youth who had massed up around the pit.”
The exact cause of the collapse remains under investigation. Devastated residents have gathered at the hazardous site, raising concerns about further risks due to the uncovered pit. Authorities are continuing efforts to account for all trapped individuals, with calls for stricter enforcement to curb illegal mining activities in the region.
