TGMA 2026: Artiste of the Year Race Heats Up Ahead of May 9 Showdown

The race for the top prize at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent years, with six heavyweights battling for the coveted Artiste of the Year title.

Nominees include Black Sherif, Medikal, Stonebwoy, Wendy Shay, Sarkodie, and Diana Hamilton, with the winner set to be announced on May 9, 2026, at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel.

Wendy Shay has boldly declared herself the likely winner, insisting that her consistent hit releases, energetic performances, and strong fanbase—known as SHAYGANG—give her the edge. Her confidence has been boosted by fellow nominee Black Sherif, who has publicly acknowledged her as a strong contender in the race.

Black Sherif, who won the award in 2023, remains one of the frontrunners, driven by the success of his album Iron Boy, which surpassed 100 million streams on Boomplay by February 2026. His continued cultural influence and streaming dominance have positioned him as a major threat in the category.

Medikal has also staked his claim, arguing that he outperformed all his competitors during the year under review. The rapper points to his numerous collaborations, constant visibility, and major performances, including a high-profile show at Westhills Mall, as evidence of his dominance.

Reigning champion Stonebwoy is aiming for his third Artiste of the Year title, backed by his global appeal and consistent output, including hits like “Jejereje.” Meanwhile, rap icon Sarkodie brings experience and longevity to the contest, while gospel star Diana Hamilton continues to demonstrate the growing mainstream strength of gospel music in Ghana.

With each nominee bringing a strong case, anticipation continues to build for what promises to be a thrilling climax on awards night.
