Ghana defender Tariq Lamptey has made his long-awaited return to competitive football after spending 335 days on the sidelines with a serious ACL injury.
The 25-year-old made his comeback on Saturday when he came off the bench for Queens Park Rangers (QPR) in their goalless Championship draw against Bolton Wanderers at Loftus Road.
Lamptey was introduced in the 60th minute, replacing Amadou Mbengue, to make his first competitive appearance for QPR since joining the club during the summer transfer window.
His return marks a major milestone following a difficult period that kept him away from football for almost a year.
Lamptey suffered the ACL injury during his time at Italian club Fiorentina, where his spell was severely disrupted by the setback.
The Ghana international joined Fiorentina from Brighton in September 2025 with hopes of establishing himself in Serie A. However, he made only two appearances before suffering the serious knee injury.
After months of rehabilitation and recovery, Lamptey ended his spell in Italy and completed a permanent move to QPR in July 2026.
The defender expressed his delight at finally returning to competitive action and thanked God and QPR supporters for the warm reception he received at Loftus Road.
“So good to be back out there doing what I enjoy. Grateful to God always. Thank you for the warm welcome; now we keep working,” Lamptey posted after the game.
Although QPR created several opportunities against Bolton, neither side managed to find the breakthrough, with the game ending goalless.
For Lamptey, however, the result was secondary to the personal achievement of returning to competitive football after 335 days.
His comeback will be closely monitored in Ghana as he works to regain full fitness, sharpness and consistency ahead of a possible return to the Black Stars.
With Ghana preparing for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, Lamptey’s return provides another boost for the national team as the versatile defender begins the next chapter of his career.
