Tamale Technical University Students Storm Administration Block in Protest Over Fund Mismanagement

Hundreds of students at Tamale Technical University (TamTech) took to the streets on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, blocking all entry points to the campus and burning lorry tyres at the administration block in a fiery protest against alleged mismanagement of school funds, neglect of infrastructure, and unjustified fee hikes.

The demonstration, organized by the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), escalated into clashes with police deployed to restore order, leaving several students injured.

SRC Public Relations Officer Musa Mahamudu told media outlets that the action was a desperate cry for better welfare and university development. “Over the years, we’ve paid fees and levies for improvements, but hostels, lecture halls, and campus comfort remain deplorable. This is systematic neglect and misappropriation,” he said, demanding accountability from management.

The students petitioned the Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, highlighting how the issues violate constitutional rights to equitable and quality education. “These actions contravene principles of equity and accountability. Infrastructure is in ruins despite our payments—management must ensure judicious use of funds,” excerpts from the petition read.

TamTech, a key technical institution in northern Ghana serving over 5,000 students, has faced similar unrest before, including 2023 protests over delayed allowances. The university’s management has yet to respond, but police confirmed the deployment was to prevent escalation amid the blockade.

The incident underscores broader challenges in Ghana’s technical education sector, where funding shortfalls and infrastructure deficits have sparked protests at institutions like UDS and UEW this year.
