Suspected Motorbike Thief Lynched and Mutilated by Mob in Awutu Bawjiase

On July 30, 2025, a man suspected of stealing a motorbike was brutally lynched and mutilated by a mob of Okada riders in Awutu Bawjiase, Awutu Senya West District, Central Region, Ghana, resulting in his death.
According to reports, the deceased and an accomplice, posing as passengers, hired an Okada rider from Esikaso in the Eastern Region to travel to Awutu Bawjiase.
Upon reaching the town’s outskirts, the suspects allegedly attacked the rider with a stick, stole his motorbike, and fled.
The victim, with assistance from another Okada rider, pursued the suspects. One was apprehended by a group of riders in the middle of the road, while the second suspect escaped.
The Assembly Member for the area reported that the angry mob assaulted the captured suspect, severing his testicles during the attack.
Officers from the Awutu Bawjiase District Police Command intervened, rescuing the suspect and rushing him to the Awutu Bawjiase Polyclinic, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival due to severe injuries.
The police have confirmed the incident and are investigating both the lynching and the alleged motorbike theft.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns about mob justice in the region, as similar cases of violent vigilantism have been reported in Awutu Senya West, including a 2024 lynching over vehicle parts theft and another over a chieftaincy dispute
