Sharing Explicit Content of SHS Students Attracts Up to 10 Years in Jail – Cyber Security Authority

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has issued a strong warning to the public against the creation, possession, or circulation of sexually explicit videos and photographs involving Senior High School (SHS) students, stating that offenders face between five and ten years in prison.

In a public notice issued on Monday, December 15, 2025, the Authority described the act as a serious criminal offence under Ghana’s Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038). According to the CSA, the law strictly prohibits the taking, producing, publishing, streaming, or possession of indecent images of children on any electronic device or computer system, including mobile phones.

The Authority explained that Section 62 of the Act clearly criminalises any form of handling or distribution of indecent images involving minors, regardless of whether the person shared the content intentionally or merely forwarded it.

The CSA cautioned that individuals, bloggers, media platforms, or institutions found circulating such materials will face severe legal consequences. It stressed that ignorance of the law does not excuse offenders, adding that even receiving and forwarding such content constitutes an offence.

Members of the public who come across such materials have been advised to delete them immediately and avoid sharing them under any circumstances. The Authority also encouraged the public to report individuals or groups involved in the circulation of the illegal content through official cybersecurity and cybercrime reporting channels for swift action.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of digital platforms and the need to protect children from online abuse and exploitation. The CSA reiterated its commitment to enforcing the law and safeguarding the digital space, particularly where minors are concerned.
