Spanish football icon Sergio Ramos has shared an emotional reflection on his journey from humble beginnings to global stardom, revealing the personal struggles hidden behind his legendary career.
Born in Camas, Seville, in 1986, Ramos recounted a childhood shaped by sacrifice, family support, and an early determination to succeed through football. He credited his parents and his brother René for laying the foundation of his career, describing them as his greatest source of strength.
Ramos’ professional journey began at Sevilla FC, where he made his debut at just 17. A year later, he secured a move to Real Madrid—a turning point that transformed him into one of football’s most iconic defenders.
During his 16-year spell in Madrid, Ramos won 22 major trophies, including multiple league titles and UEFA Champions League triumphs. However, he admitted that his career was not without controversy and hardship, highlighting red cards, criticism, injuries, and the constant pressure of performing at the highest level.
“I was judged, insulted, and pushed to my limits, but I always stepped up,” he reflected.
Renowned for his fierce defending, Ramos faced and neutralized some of football’s greatest attackers, including Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski, Mohamed Salah, Didier Drogba, and Zlatan Ibrahimović. His aggressive style earned both admiration and criticism, cementing his reputation as one of the most dominant defenders of his generation.
Despite his success, Ramos described his departure from Real Madrid in 2021 as one of the most painful moments of his life, noting the absence of a proper farewell.
He later joined Paris Saint-Germain, but struggled with injuries and admitted he never truly found happiness during his time in France.
Another major setback came when Spain’s national team coach Luis Enrique left him out of the squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar—a decision Ramos said “broke his heart” after months of preparation and sacrifice.
In 2023, with his future uncertain and offers from abroad on the table, Ramos chose an emotional return to Sevilla FC, prioritizing passion over financial gain.
“I went back for love, to close the circle,” he said, describing his return as deeply emotional.
In a surprising move, the veteran defender later signed for CF Monterrey in 2025, embracing a new challenge outside Europe.
Now at 39, Ramos admits he is no longer the same physically but insists his passion for football remains unchanged.
“I don’t run the same, but I love this game like the first day,” he said. “Every minute on the pitch is a gift.”
