Senegal Honours Ghana’s James Kwegyir Aggrey with Commemorative Stamp

The Government of Senegal has honoured renowned Ghanaian scholar and Pan-Africanist James Emman Kwegyir Aggrey with a commemorative airmail stamp.
Aggrey was featured alongside Alain LeRoy Locke on a special stamp issued under the theme “précurseurs de la Négritude”—translated as “forerunners of the Negritude movement.”
Although Aggrey was not formally part of the Negritude movement, he has been recognised for his profound intellectual influence and his role in shaping ideas that later inspired the philosophy, which celebrates Black identity, culture, and heritage.
Both Aggrey and Locke are widely credited with laying the intellectual foundation for the movement, which later gained prominence through leading African and Caribbean thinkers.
Born in Anomabo in Ghana’s Central Region, Aggrey was a respected missionary, educator, and public intellectual. He began his academic journey at Mfantsipim School, where his brilliance became evident early in life.
The honour highlights Aggrey’s enduring legacy and his contribution to Pan-African thought and education, reinforcing the historical ties between Ghana and Senegal in promoting African identity and unity.
