Second Batch of 345 Ghanaians Evacuated from South Africa Arrive Safely in Accra

345 Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa has arrived safely at the Kotoka International Airport.
The returnees landed on Saturday, June 6, 2026, as part of the government’s coordinated emergency response to the rising xenophobic attacks and anti-immigrant tensions affecting Ghanaian nationals and other African migrants in South Africa.
The latest group joins hundreds of compatriots who were repatriated in the first batch on May 27. The evacuation exercise, spearheaded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ghana’s High Commission in South Africa, was scaled up after more than 1,500 Ghanaians registered to return home due to heightened insecurity.
Many of the evacuees had lived and worked in South Africa for years, operating businesses and building livelihoods, but were compelled to leave behind their properties and belongings amid reports of harassment, attacks, and destruction of foreign-owned businesses.
A third flight carrying over 300 passengers is expected to arrive on Sunday, June 7.
The operation comes against the backdrop of renewed xenophobic violence in parts of South Africa, incidents that have drawn widespread condemnation from governments and human rights organisations across the continent for undermining African unity and regional cooperation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has indicated that it will continue to monitor developments in South Africa and provide necessary support to any remaining Ghanaians who wish to return home.
