Mrs. Gunn explained that pedestrians are not just people who walk on the road, but also those who ride bicycles, scooters, and motorized tricycles. She emphasized that drivers and motor riders can play a crucial role in protecting pedestrians by being cautious and respecting their right of way.

Citing the Road Traffic Regulation 2180/2012/154, Mrs. Gunn noted that pedestrians also have a responsibility to abide by traffic regulations, failure to do so can result in legal action.

The statistics are alarming, with 1205 pedestrians hit by vehicles in 2023 and 573 pedestrians hit by cars in the first quarter of 2024. Mrs. Gunn advised road users, particularly pedestrians, to use available footbridges or zebra crossings to ensure their safety.

The NRSA representative also emphasized the importance of speed humps on roads, which help to reduce speeding and protect pedestrians. She also cautioned against distracted walking, urging pedestrians not to use earpieces or press on their mobile phones while walking along the roadside.

When asked about the NRSA’s attention on checking vehicle safety features, Mrs. Gunn explained that they conduct pre-departure checks on vehicles, including brakes, tyres, headlights, and taillights. However, she noted that there are limitations to the extent of their checks due to resources.

The NRSA is calling on all road users to take responsibility in ensuring road safety and reducing the number of accidents involving pedestrians.
