Power outages and weeds worsen water shortages in Accra and Tema

Residents across parts of Accra and Tema are grappling with worsening water shortages as the Ghana Water Company Limited confirms ongoing supply disruptions driven by unstable electricity and environmental challenges.

In a press release, the company said the situation stems largely from “ongoing instability in power supply to the Water Treatment Plants and associated Booster Stations,” which has significantly disrupted water production and distribution.

The utility emphasised that its operations are heavily dependent on electricity, explaining that treatment processes, pumping systems, transmission lines and booster stations all require a stable and continuous power supply to function effectively. As a result, any interruption or fluctuation directly impacts the company’s ability to deliver water to consumers.

The situation has been further compounded by environmental challenges at the Kpong Water Intake. According to the company, an unusual surge in aquatic weeds—worsened by recent heavy rains around the Akosombo area—has led to clogging of intake screens and reduced raw water extraction for treatment.

Despite these setbacks, Ghana Water Ltd. assured the public that technical teams are working around the clock to clear the weeds and maintain operations in order to minimise the impact on supply.

Management also revealed that it is engaging key stakeholders, including the Volta River Authority, Ghana Grid Company, and the Electricity Company of Ghana, to address the root cause of the disruptions and restore stable power to water facilities.

The combined effect of erratic electricity supply and the weed invasion has resulted in intermittent and reduced water flow to several communities, placing added strain on households and businesses already dealing with unreliable utilities.

Authorities say efforts are ongoing to stabilise both power and water systems, but residents may have to brace for continued disruptions in the short term.
