Police Officer Killed, Two Injured as Rhino Kia Mini Truck Loses Control on Somanya-Adukrom Highway

A police officer has died and two others were seriously injured after a Rhino Kia mini truck carrying three police personnel veered off the road and crashed on the Somanya-Adukrom highway at Aseseso on Saturday, March 21, 2026.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed that officers from the Kpong Municipal Fire Station responded rapidly to a distress call following the incident.

According to preliminary reports, the vehicle — descending the Aseseso hill — developed a sudden fault with its gear lever, causing the driver to lose control. The truck was travelling from Begoro towards Ashiaman when the crash occurred.

The driver, identified as a police officer, died instantly at the scene from the impact.

Firefighters quickly extricated the two surviving occupants, who were trapped in the wreckage, and rushed them to the Yilo Krobo District Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Their conditions have not been publicly detailed, but GNFS officials noted that the prompt rescue helped ensure they received immediate care.

The swift intervention by fire officers prevented further complications and facilitated the transfer of the injured to hospital.

The accident has once again highlighted safety concerns on hilly sections of highways in the Eastern Region, particularly during descents where mechanical failures or loss of control can prove fatal.

The Ghana Police Service and Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) have launched a full investigation into the cause of the crash, including examination of the vehicle’s mechanical condition and possible contributing factors such as road conditions or speed.

No further details on the identities of the deceased officer or the injured personnel have been released pending notification of next of kin.

Our thoughts are with the family of the fallen officer, the injured survivors, and the Ghana Police Service during this difficult time.
