Police Investigate Precursors to Alleged Assault of Techiman SHS Student by Two Teachers

The Ghana Police Service is conducting a comprehensive investigation into the events leading up to the alleged assault of a 17-year-old student at Techiman Senior High School (SHS) in the Bono East Region. The inquiry follows the questioning and subsequent bail release of two teachers implicated in the incident.
According to the Bono East Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Shaibu Osei, initial interrogations indicate that the widely circulated viral video—which depicts the teachers physically assaulting the student, with one stepping on his head—captured only a fraction of a much broader conflict.
Context Behind the Confrontation
Preliminary police findings reveal that the incident took place around 4:00 PM on October 23, 2026, on the school premises.
Authorities report that the confrontation was triggered by allegations that the Form Three senior student had bullied two Form One students, taking them to an isolated area and demanding money from them. After refusing, the junior students managed to escape and reported the bullying to school authorities.
According to accounts gathered by the Daily Graphic from the school, the two teachers—identified as 44-year-old ICT teacher Ameyaw Adusa and 37-year-old English Language teacher Jerry Jones Owusu Bekoe—approached the senior student to caution him about the allegations. The situation escalated when the student allegedly resisted them belligerently, culminating in the physical assault.
Police Action and Bail Status
School authorities handed the two teachers over to the police on November 1, 2026. Following interrogation and caution statements, the police intended to present them in court the following day. However, because the court did not sit on November 2 due to an ongoing strike by the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG), the teachers were released on police bail with sureties that evening.
DCOP Osei emphasized that law enforcement is taking a holistic approach to uncover the full sequence of events.
“We realised during the interrogation that there was more to it before the incident happened. So we are going down to find out how the whole thing happened from that stage to where we are now so that we can get a broad idea as to what really happened,” DCOP Osei stated, adding that medical evidence and witness testimonies are currently being gathered.
Legal Path and Victim Support
Addressing potential culpability on both sides, DCOP Osei noted that if investigations confirm the student engaged in bullying or extortion, the authorities will invoke the Juvenile Justice Act to handle the matter lawfully. He stressed that the police are committed to maintaining objectivity and will not prejudge the outcome.
Meanwhile, the victim has received treatment and been discharged from the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman. Techiman Municipal Director of Education, Reverend Isaac Amankwah, noted that while the student reported a major injury behind his ear during a hospital visit, his overall condition is stable. To aid in his recovery, the police have arranged professional psychological support through a clinical psychologist.
