Police in Bono East Return GH₵85,000 Found by Roadside to Kumasi Businessman

Officers from the Bono East Regional Police Command have returned GH₵85,000 in cash to a Kumasi businessman after discovering the money in a bag abandoned by the roadside along the Techiman–Kumasi highway.

The cash was found in the early hours of Saturday, February 14, 2026, at about 4:20 a.m. during a routine snap checkpoint operation.

The officers noticed a bag lying by the roadside, believed to have fallen from a moving vehicle. The bag had the name “Ofori” and a phone number boldly written on it.

Led by Inspector George Appiah and three other officers, the team retrieved the bag and inspected its contents, discovering a substantial amount of money inside.

The bag was immediately forwarded to the Regional Command for further checks and investigation. Using the phone number written on the bag, police contacted Stephen Ofori, a 53-year-old businessman from Ashtown in Kumasi.

Mr Ofori reported to the station to claim the bag. He explained that the GH₵85,000 had been withdrawn from GCB Bank in Wa and was being transported to Kumasi in a commercial vehicle when it apparently fell off during the journey.

The money was counted and verified in his presence, confirming the exact amount of GH₵85,000. After satisfactory checks and verification, the full sum was handed back to him.

The Bono East Regional Police Command commended Inspector Appiah and his team for their honesty and professionalism. They also thanked members of the public who assisted in drawing attention to the abandoned bag.

The incident highlights the integrity of officers on duty and serves as a reminder to travellers to secure valuables properly when using public transport. No further action is required as the rightful owner has been reunited with his money.
