Police Arrest Man Caught on Viral Video Forcing Child to Smoke – Incident Dates Back 5 Years

The Ghana Police Service has arrested Samuel Obeng Acheampong, the man seen in a disturbing viral video forcing a young child to inhale what appears to be a lit cigarette, in a swift intelligence-led operation on Friday, November 22.

During interrogation, the suspect confessed to the offence, revealing that the shocking incident occurred approximately five years ago. He remains in custody and is expected to be arraigned before court soon to face charges related to child endangerment and abuse.

The Police have reiterated their zero-tolerance stance on actions that put children at risk, warning that anyone exposing minors to harmful substances or other dangers will face the full force of the law.

“This arrest underscores our unwavering commitment to child protection. We urge the public to report any suspected cases of child harm immediately,” a Police spokesperson stated.

The video, which surfaced earlier this week, ignited national outrage and prompted an urgent investigation by both the Police and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection. Authorities are also working to locate and support the child involved.

Child rights advocates have hailed the arrest as a step forward but called for stronger preventive measures and public education to curb such abuses.
