Police Arrest 17 Suspected Drug Peddlers in Tamale Operation

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team has arrested 17 individuals suspected of drug peddling during a targeted operation at Waterworks area in Tamale, a notorious hotspot for criminal gangs and narcotics activities.
Acting on intelligence, a 49-member team led by ASP Bawah Abdul Jalil conducted the raid on December 13, 2025, recovering quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, eight bottles of Koffex cough syrup, two sachets of suspected opioid tablets, and a motorbike.
The suspects were detained at Sakasaka Police Station for further investigation, while the seized exhibits were handed over for screening and forensic analysis. The operation was executed without casualties.
In a statement signed by ASP Alhaji Bawah Jalil, the team highlighted recent successes, including the rescue of a kidnapped individual and sustained arrests over the past few weeks.
The operation also involved intensified patrols and searches in Tamale and Kasalgu, as well as courtesy visits to the Chiefs of Tolon and Nyankpala. The traditional leaders welcomed the initiative, pledged their support, and expressed concern over rising drug abuse among youth, calling for continued efforts to restore order.
ASP Bawah reaffirmed the unit’s commitment to ongoing operations to combat illicit drug trade, robbery, and other crimes, enhancing police visibility and community collaboration in the Tamale Metropolis and Tolon District.
