Planned 20% Transport Fare Increase Postponed Pending Mahama Meeting

The proposed 20 percent increase in transport fares has been temporarily suspended as transport unions await a scheduled meeting with John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday.

The decision follows earlier announcements by commercial transport operators indicating that new fares would take effect on Tuesday, June 2, 2026.

However, developments at the Tema Station in Lapaz on Monday showed that implementation of the increment has been put on hold pending further consultations with government.

Speaking to  News reporters the National Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, David Agboado, said discussions with the Transport Ministry revealed that the President wants to engage stakeholders directly before any final decision is made.

According to him, the postponement is intended to allow dialogue at the highest level in an effort to reach a consensus on the proposed fare adjustment.

Mr. Agboado also dismissed suggestions of divisions among transport unions over the planned fare hike.

“Those who want to politicize where they get their daily bread are free to do so but Concerned Drivers will speak truth to power and get what is due them,” he stated.

He noted that while some commuters oppose the proposed increase, others appear willing to comply if the adjustment is eventually approved.

The development comes amid ongoing negotiations between government and transport operators over fare reviews, largely driven by fuel prices, spare parts costs, and other operational expenses.
