Otto Addo Makes History as First Black Stars Coach to Secure Consecutive World Cup Qualifications

Otto Addo has cemented his legacy as the first head coach to guide Ghana’s Black Stars to back-to-back FIFA World Cup qualifications, achieving this milestone with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Comoros in their final Group I qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on October 12, 2025.

Addo, who also led Ghana to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar after missing the 2018 edition in Russia, secured the nation’s fifth World Cup appearance with this win. Among African nations, only Cameroon (8), Morocco (7), Tunisia (7), and Nigeria (6) have more appearances.

The victory, following a 5-0 rout of the Central African Republic earlier in the campaign, fulfilled Addo’s pre-match pledge to end qualifiers strongly, avenging past losses to Comoros as urged by MP Kofi Adams. Nationwide celebrations erupted, with X posts like @GhanaFooty’s “Otto Addo, our hero! World Cup bound again!” capturing the euphoria.

Ghana now shifts focus to preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with expectations high for a standout performance. The achievement adds to Africa’s football momentum, with Uganda’s U-17 team also qualifying under Laryea Kingston.
