OSP Was Akufo-Addo’s Political Tool” – NDC’s Hamza Suhuyini Fires Fresh Salvo

NDC Communications team member and lawyer Hamza Sayibu Suhuyini has launched a blistering attack on the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), accusing former President Akufo-Addo of creating the institution purely for political point-scoring rather than genuine anti-corruption reform.
Speaking on TV3’s New Day morning show on Wednesday, Suhuyini declared:
“The OSP was created as a political response to score cheap points under Nana Akufo-Addo.
I’m not surprised that even those heading it have adopted the same political posture.
The time has come for us to confront the politics of that institution.”
His comments come just 24 hours after Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng filed 78 charges against eight high-profile figures, including former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, over the controversial SML-GRA revenue assurance deal.
Suhuyini’s Core Concerns
The OSP Act still subjects prosecution powers to the Attorney-General under Article 88
Lack of visible collaboration between OSP and A-G raises questions about independence
If OSP fails in court, the A-G’s hands could be tied from reopening the same case (res judicata risk)
The office has inherited the same “political DNA” it was meant to fight
“If this gentleman (Kissi Agyebeng) goes and is not successful with the SML matter, it ties the hands of the Attorney-General’s office forever,” Suhuyini warned.
Those Charged in the SML Case
Ken Ofori-Atta (former Finance Minister)
Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah & Emmanuel Kofi Nti (former GRA Commissioners-General)
Isaac Crentsil & Kwadwo Damoa (senior GRA officials)
Ernest Akore (ex-Technical Advisor, Finance Ministry)
Evans Adusei & SML Company
Charges include conspiracy, procurement breaches, causing financial loss, and influencing public officers.
While the OSP hailed the move as proof of its independence, Suhuyini’s remarks have reignited the long-running debate:
Is the OSP truly an independent anti-corruption bulldog — or just another political football?
The first court appearance is expected before the end of November.
