One in Critical Condition After Tricycle Loaded with Rice Crashes into Voxy Car Due to Brake Failure in Asante Akyem North

A serious road traffic accident involving a tricycle heavily loaded with rice and a Toyota Voxy car has left one person fighting for their life at the hospital.
The crash occurred on the morning of Friday, March 13, 2026, at Hwidem in the Asante Akyem North Municipality.
According to eyewitness accounts, the tricycle was travelling from Agogo towards Bima when the driver lost control of the brakes while negotiating a curve shortly after descending a hill. The runaway vehicle veered off course and collided forcefully with an oncoming Toyota Voxy car bearing registration number AS 2114-26, which was heading towards Agogo.
The impact caused significant damage to both vehicles. The injured person, identified as the owner of the rice being transported on the tricycle, sustained severe injuries and is currently in critical condition receiving treatment at a nearby medical facility.
Emergency responders and local authorities quickly arrived at the scene to assist the victims, secure the area, and clear the roadway to restore traffic flow.
The Ghana Police Service’s Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) has launched an investigation into the incident, with early indications pointing to brake failure as the primary cause. Authorities are expected to examine the mechanical condition of the tricycle and any contributing factors such as road conditions or overloading.
Road accidents involving tricycles remain a concern on many rural and semi-urban routes in the Ashanti Region, where brake issues, overloading, and challenging terrain frequently contribute to crashes. This latest incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for stricter enforcement of vehicle maintenance standards and safety regulations for commercial tricycles.
The injured victim’s condition continues to be monitored closely by medical personnel, while the family and community await further updates. No fatalities have been reported in the crash.
