NPP’s Ahiagbah Accuses NDC of “Betraying” Ghanaians Over LGBTQ+ Bill Promises

Richard Ahiagbah has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of betraying Ghanaians who supported the controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, alleging that the party has abandoned its earlier commitments on the matter.
In a Facebook post, Mr. Ahiagbah argued that the NDC misled religious leaders, traditional authorities, and citizens who backed the legislation, despite previously presenting it as a defence of Ghanaian cultural and moral values.
He claimed that between 2021 and 2024, the NDC consistently assured churches, mosques, and traditional leaders of its strong support for the bill. According to him, all NDC Members of Parliament voted in favour of the legislation when it was passed in February 2024, and also urged then-President Nana Akufo-Addo to assent to it.
Mr. Ahiagbah said many Ghanaians trusted the NDC’s position on the issue because it was widely framed as a matter of national values rather than party politics.
However, he alleged that the current administration of President John Dramani Mahama has since introduced a revised version of the bill containing more than 30 amendments.
He claimed the changes have weakened key provisions of the original legislation, including penalties and enforcement measures, describing the development as a reversal of earlier promises.
“The NDC cannot have it both ways,” he said, insisting that the party must be held accountable for what he described as shifting positions after coming into power.
Mr. Ahiagbah further questioned the credibility of the government, suggesting the alleged changes raise broader concerns about trust and consistency in governance.
He urged Ghanaians to support the opposition New Patriotic Party and its 2024 presidential candidate, Mahamudu Bawumia, whom he described as offering principled leadership committed to protecting national values.
