NPP Raises Alarm Over Alleged Politically Motivated Arrests

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed concern over what it describes as a rising trend of politically motivated arrests targeting its members, warning that such actions could undermine Ghana’s democracy and rule of law.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, criticised the government’s handling of recent arrests, describing them as “arbitrary” and lacking proper legal basis.
Concerns over democratic principles
Mr Frimpong argued that the alleged actions represent a broader pattern aimed at silencing opposition voices and intimidating party supporters.
“This is not just about one individual or one case. It’s a growing pattern—a systematic attempt to erode our democratic freedoms,” he stated.
He warned that continued use of state institutions in this manner could erode public trust in Ghana’s justice system and weaken key democratic principles such as freedom of expression and the right to liberty.
Warning of political consequences
The NPP General Secretary further cautioned that such developments could have long-term implications for political stability in the country.
“The tables will turn,” he said, suggesting that a future NPP government could respond in similar fashion if the current trend persists.
However, he clarified that the party is not advocating retaliation but rather calling for fairness and adherence to the rule of law.
Call for restraint
Mr Frimpong urged the government to reconsider its approach and ensure that all actions are guided by constitutional principles.
He emphasised that democracy thrives on justice, transparency and equal treatment under the law, warning that any system built on perceived injustice risks eventual collapse.
