The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has alleged that drug traffickers have established laboratories in Ghana for processing illicit drugs, including cocaine, for export.
Speaking at a press conference, the party’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, alleged that the operations are taking place under the watch of President Mahama.
“The intelligence we have picked is that these drug traffickers have established laboratories here for processing of illicit drugs and narcotics under the watch of President Mahama. And it appears that he doesn’t care,” he said.
He claimed this explains why volumes of drugs continue to surface in shipments and in the luggage of passengers from Ghana passing through Sydney and Dunkirk.
“That is the reason why volumes of drugs keep surfacing in the form of ships and the luggage of passengers in Sydney, Dunkirk, and Johannesburg. Because the processing is happening right here in Ghana,” he said.
Nana B went on to allege that government officials are facilitating the transit of drugs processed in the country.
“They have laboratories right here in Ghana, clandestine laboratories where illicit drugs, cocaine, are being processed, and government officials aiding the smooth transit of these drugs outside of this jurisdiction,” he alleged.
The comments come weeks after French customs seized nearly 3.9 tonnes of cocaine, worth an estimated €225 million (about US$261 million), at the port of Dunkirk on September 10.
The shipment, concealed in a container of plastic waste exported from Ghana, was partly destined for Antwerp, Belgium, and has been linked to the network of Dutch fugitive Jos Leijdekkers, also known as “Bolle Jos.”
Several suspects have been arrested and arraigned by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) in connection with the case.
